WHY THE HEROINE BECAME THE VILLAINESS? - Chapter Three

CHAPTER THREE

"Lady Beatrice?"

“…”

As Roanne opened her eyes, she instantly arose and looked around her surrounding reflexively until the view of the trembling maid beside her appeared. The man is nowhere to be found and the darkness filled the entire place a while ago was now flattered with the yellow sunlight peeking from the window. Sigh. She turned her gazed back straight; she touched her forehead. “What a scary dream. Just what the hell. I have been transmigrated in this novel, but that man who murdered me that night doesn't even know how to stop tormenting her. ”

"La— Lady Beatrice?" , Marielle replied with frightened look.

Hearing the call of Mariella at her side, she lifted her head and looked again to the fluttered maid.

"What are you doing here? Uh— ”, as she stopped.  Without looking in the mirror, she can feel the sweats all over her forehead and neck. " Before answering, can you please bring me a towel?" , with an order tone, but keeping the act that she is Lady Beatrice.

"Yes, yes, right away, My Lady." , quickly answered by Marielle. Then, she rushed to get a towel.

Now that she is well aware of her real surroundings, a delicious scent reached by her nose. A set of tea cups and sweet colored macarons is well prepared on the table. How long did I sleep? Judging by the yellow light, I guess it is already between 3:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon. It is time for snacks. ”

Then, Marielle returned with a towel at her hand.

“Here is the towel, My Lady. Let me wipe your face— "

She shook her head and immediately replied, “I can manage myself. Give it to me." . Then, she stretched her hand to Marielle putting an indication that to give the towel.

“.. ah but—”

"Don't make me repeat myself." Marielle then handed the towel to her Lady.

Using the towel, Roanne started to gently wipe her face and neck full of sweats, and returned it back as she finished. Marielle took it then.

Being reminded of the reason why Marielle went to the Lady's room, she said "My Lady, I brought you your dessert for this afternoon."

“Yes, I have noticed it on the table. Thank you. ”

"She thanked me again." , Marielle said to herself slightly bewilderedly as she already experienced it since this morning, and hearing it again, she saw a glimpse of hope that as this strange event continues, maybe, just maybe her relationship as personal maid to her lady will go better.

Roanne stood up from the bed and approached the table filled with sweet colored macarons. Marielle followed and started pouring the cup of hot tea and gently put it on near the lady.

“My Lady, were you really sure that you do not want to call the physician? It would be good to be sure about your health, and the Marquess and your brother might get worried if it became worst ”

“Wait. Did you inform anyone? ”

"No, My Lady, I have spilled no one, and the Marquess and your brother are not aware of your schedules as they were busy at this time."

"Good." Busy? As I have not yet read the novel, I have no idea about the relation of Beatrice to her family. I think I should gather information first, but how should I do it without getting caught of suspicion that I am not the real Beatrice. “Marielle, the dinner…” she stopped as she thought how should the right approached for her to get information without facing problem.

"The dinner, My Lady?" , asked by Marielle.

“Ehem. Will I eat dinner with father and brother tonight? ”, She responded hoping that she went smooth with it because she can't think of any way.

"Ah— My Lady, the Marquess and your brother are out of the estate right now."

"They're not here?"

“Yes, My Lady. The Marquess is currently in the imperial palace. He was called by our majesty, the King. He will be staying there for five (5) days.”, Marielle answered confusedly, but she didn’t dwell on it too much due to the prior strange events earlier with her lady.

“How about my brother?”

“Your brother was already enrolled in his first year and currently attending the university now. He’ll be back this next summer.”

What is the day today?” She shook her head as she realized the mistake of her question. “Ah what I mean is how many months ‘til summer? Will you deduce it for me.”, I shouldn’t ask the present day as I might appear odd.

“It would be almost nine months, My Lady.”

“So, I will able to meet brother after nine months?”, she mumbled to herself, but still reached Marielle’s ears.

“Yes, My Lady, but you don’t have to be feel sad as Master Ronald said, it is only a one school year that you two will not be able to meet. Afterall, you will also be attending the university next year.”

“Attend?”

“Yes, My Lady. By next year, you will become at your twelfth year”

“I see.” Judging by Marielle’s statement, it seems that Beatrice has a good relationship with her brother. If it is really  true that the brother said that to Beatrice after leaving the estate, and, in any case, there is no way the maid will lie to her master. And she is even not aware that I am not her real master.

Marielle happily added, “And in the time that you can attend the university, My Lady, you will be able to meet again the young heir, Sir Zeke Audric Aland.”

Zeke Audric Aland, the male lead. Roanne flinched by just hearing that name. She was well aware that the villainess always gets her doomed through the hands of the male leads. It is one of the layman’s term to all. Just the mere thought, chill strikes her spine and heartbeat echoed through her veins. Marielle noticed the uneasiness of her lady and misunderstood the situation.

“Now that I remember, My Lady, you haven’t written a letter to the young heir Zeke today.”, she well said with calm tone trying to uplift the worries that reflected on her Lady’s face.

Lost in thought, she somehow grasped to reply, “Ah yes, the letter.”  “What letter?”

****-------****

“I should put it on record today, Mr. President.”

“What do you mean?”, confusedly replied by the President, Zeke Audric Aland.

“Well, there is no letter from Lady Beatrice Delavine Croix for you that arrived today. It has been two weeks since you were studying here in the university, and the beautiful and kind lady never missed a day to send a letter to you even though she hasn’t getting a reply from you.”, said by the Vice President, Alec, and intendedly pressed the word, “Kind”, as he used to describe the lady in which, in reality, far from the real character of the latter.

“Shut it, Alec.”, after answering, Zeke glared to Alec. “Just give the documents that you are holding and you can take your rest now. It has been already a long day.”, as he ordered.

“I am just quite confused today that Lady—”

“I said, shut it.” He scolded. “Rather being confused, is it not that I should find it a blessing from above that the lady took her day off in disturbing my day?”, as he continued.

“Yes, as you said, Mr. President.”, still teasingly replied by Alec. “In any case, I will take my leave. I am happy serving you today, Mr. President.”

“Yes, thank you for your hard work Alec.”

As Zeke was left alone in the Student Council room, he leaned his back in the chair, touched his forehead and released a deep sigh.

Well, there is no letter from Lady Beatrice Delavine Croix for you that arrived today.

Zeke naturally smiled by the thought that Lady Beatrice did not send him a letter of disturb today. He purposely called it that way because it only caused nuisance for him. Further, the fact that he would be able to get a break for a whole school year from the Lady is rewarding. “There will be no greater than this.”

WHY THE HEROINE BECAME THE VILLAINESS - Chapter Two

CHAPTER TWO

Huff huff huff. Run. Run. Run fast.

“You! You can’t escape from me.”, a man’s voice creepily echoed, and for some reason, it gave off a pressure to effortlessly one’s body to shudder.

It is so dark, so dark. A very dark long road. Keeping the pace of my breath as I run, I don’t have any idea who am I running from or where am I going to. All that registering to my mind is I need to run, run as fast as I can. This is so scary. I’m scared. “Please. Mom! Mom! Someone! Please save me.” Huf huf. Tears started to fall from my eyes. I cried. Cried and shouting, “Someone please save me.”

“Lady Beatrice, wake up.”, Marielle said with shaky voice towards to her Lady, who still sleeping with cold sweats all over her face. She thought that the Lady seems to be having a bad dream. “Lady Beatrice.”, as she called again.

****-------****

It is already 3:00 in the afternoon and Marielle is presently in the kitchen to pick up the snacks and to brew tea for her lady. Lady Beatrice should be attending the tea party of Lady Rosalla this afternoon, but due to health conditions, she ordered her to send a letter of apology, which she did, after guiding her lady back to her room. Bewilderedly, she doesn’t still understand why the lady refused her request to call a physician. With all honesty, she is actually having a hard time to comprehend the strange behavior of Lady Beatrice manifested just this morning.

As her usual morning routine and ordered by her Lady, she went to prepare the bath. It is well known in the estate that Lady Beatrice cherished her bath time so preparing it should be thoroughly and properly done or else... Marielle involuntary gulped just the mere thought of no-good things will happen if you dissatisfied her.

Before she was designated by Sir Nico, the butler of the Marquess Croix’s estate, many warnings and scary stories reached to her. The recent story was the former maid that she replaced a week ago. The poor maid was harshly fired by the order of none other than Lady Beatrice. On the day of the incident, it appeared that there are no available stocks left for the Lady’s favorite lavender oil for her bath due to the last drought happened in the west.

The drought in the west massively affected the trading industry of the entire Aland dukedom. The Aland Dukedom is known in its rich agriculture and mining; however, flower fields are not one of its focus areas.

Afraid of informing the Lady, the former maid decided to put citrus oils in the Lady’s bath, which the latter noticed it immediately as she goes in the bathtub. The hot brewed tea beside the bathtub was thrown to the maid by angry Lady Beatrice that scarred the left arm of the maid, and the story didn’t just stop there as Marielle also learned that that the unfortunate maid had nails scratches on the face, neck, and arms which obviously incurred by her lady’s wrath. It is also become her great reminder to always carefully double check the needs of her lady are always ready and available.

After everything is set properly, she went back straight to the Lady’s room.

Knock. Knock.

“Lady Beatrice. It is your maid, Marielle.”, as she called behind the doors.

“…”

“Why there is no answer? Did she sleep again?”, Marielle talked to herself.

“My Lady?”, she called again.

With a long silence, Lady Beatrice finally replied, “Come in.”

Marielle gently opened the door and stepped inside the room. Lowering her head, she informed Lady Beatrice, “My Lady, your bath is ready.”

“Ah yes, thank you.”

“Thank you? Did she hear it right? Lady Beatrice did thank her?”, Marielle would like to lift her head and peek her lady’s face, but scared to do it, she remained herself looking down as her normal way to the lady.

Lady Beatrice, then, stood up and act to step out the room. As Marielle ready to follow, her lady stopped and a few moments, turned back to her.

“Marielle, go ahead first and I will follow you from behind.”

“Lady?”, bewilderingly replied by Marielle.

“Do I have to repeat myself?”

“I humbly apologized, my Lady. Yes, I will go ahead first.”, she quickly replied.

Marielle did her Lady’s order. She went ahead, but curiosity mixed with perplexity was thrumming beneath her skin.

****-------****

With relief, Lady Beatrice took her bath silently. Marielle strangely seems to notice that her lady looked thinking deeply while sitting down embracing both knees, curled up in the bathtub. Her dark sky-blue eyes really appeared mystic.

After the bath, Marielle help in dressing up Lady Beatrice.

“Marielle.”

“Yes, My Lady?”, Marielle was shocked by the sudden call of her name, but able to calm herself to respond.

“What are my schedules today?”

“Today, My Lady, you were invited by Lady Isabelle Rosalla for a tea party this afternoon.”

“I don’t feel well. Send a letter of apology that I would not be able to attend to her tea party.”

“You don’t feel well, My Lady?” Marielle stepped back and lowered her head once again. “I am sorry to not notice it immediately. I will call the physician right away. I’ll guide you to your room first, My Lady.”

“No, no.”, Lady Beatrice shook her hand and stopped her while replying.

Surprised by the respond and unusual hand gesture of the Lady, Marielle once again confused, “My Lady?”

“I mean, no need to call the physician and don’t let anyone knows about it. All I need is some rest. Ehem. Please don’t make me repeat myself.”, answered in low tone.

Marielle flinched. “Yes, My Lady as you said.”

“Let’s go back to my room.”

“Yes, My Lady.”

****-------****

After returning from the bathroom, “Marielle before you leave, give me some pen and paper.”

“Yes, My Lady”.

With the pen and paper on the table, Marielle, then, left Roanne alone lying in her bed as she pretended that she is feeling under the weather today.

Confirmedly that Marielle already gone in the room, she immediately jumped out from the bed.  She just hoped that the maid, Marielle, did not find her indifferently. She tried to look compose and calm, but her blood inside was vibratingly echoing of worries while conferring to Marielle earlier. “I think I am going crazy,” as she mumbled while biting her right thumb. Unconsciously, she was walking back and forth, circling her room.

“How this happened? All I remembered that I was lying on the verge of death. I was stabbed by a crazy man. Now, the romance novel that I purchased that night, its villainess, Beatrice Delavine Croix, became who I am today. What should I do? I haven’t completely read the novel. I only know that what awaits to the villainess Beatrice was a cruel death.  I only knew the gist of the story, ONLY the summary and the marketing ads of the book.”

Through the pen and paper given by Marielle, she started to write what was she only knew about the story.

The villainess, Beatrice Delavine Croix, daughter of Marquess Croix, is the top candidate to be engaged to the Duke Aland’s heir, Zeke Audric Aland. She and Zeke were childhood friends that later on, she fell in love with him. Knowingly a spoiled woman, Beatrice tried everything at her hands to get the affection of Zeke which the latter finds annoyingly. She followed everywhere the young heir and when she found him, she clings to him like a leech.

The heroine of the novel, Canaria de Brishen, illegitimate daughter of Count Brishen, caught the attention of the young heir, Zeke, that caused the wrath and hatred of villainess Beatrice towards to heroine Canaria.

Villainess Beatrice bullied and planned wicked schemes to heroine Canaria. As a result of her evil doings to the heroine, it leads the ruins of the Marquess family and her cruel death.

As Roanne tried to crack the brain of the body that she already obtained, flashes of memories came to her. The memories of real Beatrice Delavine Croix started to come in.

… as it likely became part of her own memories. Is this what they called reincarnation?

WHY THE HEROINE BECAME THE VILLAINESS - Chapter One

CHAPTER ONE

“I should have enough money now.”, mumbling to myself while counting the money that I have saved for the entire two weeks of enduring by preventing myself to buy my favorite desserts. Ah finally, the hellish weeks are over.  “Oh my! I can’t wait to get a hold of it.”, saying loudly as I stand from my seat and grab my bag to leave the office.

“You seem bright today, Ma’am Scott”, greeted with smile by Lianne Wood, my co-worker, as she sees me leaving the office. “Hmm... might be going on a date, then?” asking with curious eyes and teasing smile.

“Do I really look that bright?”, I replied to her with innocent grin. Unfortunately for her expectation, I am just so happy that I would be able to get a hand of my favorite novel that I have been eyeing since the last two weeks, but due to my tight budget, I wasn’t able to buy it instantly.

“Curiouser curiouser”, reacted with her teasing smile. “Anyway, take care on your way, then.”

“Yes, thank you, Ma’am Wood. Take care also on your way home. Have a joyful weekend.”, as I continued stepping outside with gestured of one small handwave.

Ma’am Wood loves to tease her single co-workers, not for the gossip, but because she doesn’t want them to end up like her who live without a partner in life, and dedicated herself independently. She is just like that. Afterall, she is not the type of person who loves to dig deep in people’s personal matters. She hates gossips with all aspects that I find very comfortable being her co-worker in the office.

****-------****

“Thank you, Ma’am. Please come again.”

“Thank you”

As Roanne finally stepped out of the book store, she checked the book again from the plastic and with enthusiasm, embraced it wholeheartedly just like a mother to her baby. Finally, I got a hold of you my baby, as she screamed in her head.

It is Friday today meaning tomorrow is a yasumi day! (day off). She already prepared food and drinks at her apartment as she planned to savor ‘til night the new book that she will purchase today.

It is already night as she walked alone heading back to her apartment, and only the lamp lights kept the streets looked less scary.

Thud!

“Ack”, someone bumped her behind that caused her body out of its balance and fell to the ground. With irritation, Roanne looked at the woman who hit and ran without even checking if she was even okay. “What’s wrong with you people today!”, she angrily shouted to the woman dissipating at her view as the unknown woman rapidly run.

Standing up, she noticed that her elbow got bruise. Thankfully, her legs and feet look fine at all, and she can walk with no worry. Then, a shadow behind appeared and as she turned her body to see…

Stab. Stab. Stab.

“Blah” cough cough. In pain, she unintentionally groaned and blood followed from her mouth. Roanne vomited blood. Then, her body fell to the ground again, but this time, she can’t stand anymore. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. The feeling of pain is insufferable. It feels like being punched with internal pressure. Her view is starting to get blurred. She just heard the man, who stabbed her, mumbling to itself, but due to the pressure of pain, her hearing can’t uphold comprehensively what he is trying to say.

“I’m sorry. Sorry— I… I thought that— that you are my wife”, the man said trembling with fear and hurriedly threw the knife to the ground. “What… what I- I have done?” crouched on the ground while scratching and pulling his hair like a mad man. “Elise, my wife, how… how did you— you do this to me? I did… I did everything for you.”

Roanne felt light sticky liquid oozing out from her body. Oh! my blood. Blood. So, I guess this is my end then, being killed at the age of 27. I haven’t experienced building my own family, Ha! what am I even saying I, myself, don’t have a decent boyfriend, sucks. Hmm... I should have called mom today. I wonder what is she doing right now. Anyway, it is already late. She might be already slept by now. I should’ve listened to her more. I’m sorry. Sorry.

As I decided to close my eyes…

..

.

Knock. knock.

“Lady Beatrice”

With the sounds of knocking and calling behind the door, she opened her eyes. An unfamiliar ceiling came to her view. Her brows frowned. She hurriedly looked around the place while still on the bed. It was a large room with wide glassy window and passing through, a terrace. The bedroom is too big to be compared for a master bedroom size. Overall, the place is emitting a royalty aura as it somehow left historic details to its interior and furniture. The pink color of the pillow, curtains, and blanket is befitting for a princess.

“Ugh! my head.”, Roanne held her both temples. She felt her brain was cracking.

“Lady Beatrice.”, a woman voice came behind the doors.

Unintentionally due to her sudden headache, she loudly questioned the woman behind the doors. “Beatrice? Who is Beatrice?”

“Lady Beatrice. May I come in? Your maid, Marielle.”, the woman said not answering to her prior question.

“Come in.”, Roanne answered back.

Then, the doors opened and a woman came in wearing a typical cosplay maid costume, black dress with white apron. “Good morning, Lady Beatrice.”, Marielle bowed.

Still holding her temples, Roanne asked her. “Who is you calling Beatrice and where am I?”

“…”

The maid, Marielle, perplexedly gazed at Roanne. “Is there something wrong, Lady Beatrice?”

“You are calling me, Lady Beatrice?”

“Yes, because you are Lady Beatrice.”, Marielle hesitantly answered her question. Now that Roanne is looking at the said maid, she noticed that her hands are shaking and her body seemed to be stiffened. “Lady Beatrice Delavine Croix.”, as Marielle continued.

“Lady Beatrice Delavine Croix?”, as Roanne asked in her head. She slowly examined her body. She noticed her hair is long that would length up to her hips, and with silvery color strands. She was dumbfounded. She tried to touch her face skin. She doesn’t feel any wrinkles. Her arms were slender white and smooth. “I am not old so why do I have this silvery hair.”

“Lady Beatrice?”, spoke to Roanne with shaking hands.

“Can you give me a mirror? Please.”

Marielle went out to the room and came back with what Roanne ordered her to bring. She handed it gently to Roanne as if her life depended on it.

Looking at the mirror, in her line of sight, a beautiful woman with mystery dark blue-sky color eyes and silvery colored hair came into view.  She slowly blinks her eyes making sure that it is really her who was reflecting in the mirror. Smile. Pout. Blinks again. Smile. Blinks again.

Marielle, who was near, found the lady strange.

As Roanne gazed at the maid after examining herself in the mirror. “Marielle, right?”

“Yes, yes my lady?”, Marielle stiffened.

“Will you do your usual morning routine?”, Roanne thought it is best that she would be left alone for now for her to grasp the whole situation that she is presently in.

“Usual— Ah Yes, I will prepare your bath, my Lady.”, Marielle hurriedly stepped outside the room.

When the maid is already out of Roanne’s sight, she consciously embraced herself, curling up on the bed. Her confused mind worsening the headache she felt after waking up. Internalizing, all the memories started to flash in her mind.

****-------****

Marielle hurriedly headed to the bathroom and prepared the bath for her lady. Her stiffened body and shaking hands were vanished as she went out from her lady’s room. She was scared as she knows very well her master.

Just her thinking the cruelty and rude behavior of her master is enough to make one maid shivered, but what happened today was still a very strange phenomenon for her. It seems that the lady doesn’t know who she is. She can’t help herself to start praying that the lady just had a morning lag that’s why she was acting strangely towards to her.

* Hope you will enjoy my first decent story. :P

The villainess, Beatrice Delavine Croix, daughter of Marquess Croix, is the top candidate to be engaged to the Duke Aland’s heir, Zeke Audric Aland. In the University, Roanne, now in the body of Beatrice, planned to avoid death flags by not bothering the young heir and the heroine, but why her initial plans are all getting out of places.

“Lady Beatrice”

“Greetings, Young Heir of Duke Aland, what can I help you?”, she bowed and greeted while trying to pretend to be calm.

“I apologized for suddenly calling you, Lady Beatrice.”

At least, he is aware of it so why calling me? It is alright, Young Heir of Duke Aland”

“I would like to congratulate you on your first day and becoming the top on the exams.”, with a bright smile said by Zeke.

“Thank you for your kind gesture, Young Heir of Duke Aland. It is an honor.”, Beatrice gracefully said and as she turning back on him.

“Ah Lady Beatrice.”, Zeke tried to stop her again.

What is it again? I am trying not to bother you here, then, what with all of this? As Beatrice, turned again to face Zeke, “Yes, Young Heir of Duke Aland.”

Zeke chuckled a little that made Beatrice tilted her head, confused what was that laughing about.

“I apologized again Lady Beatrice. I just noticed that you have been calling me Young Heir of Duke Aland for four times already. We are in the university, and all students are on equal footing here, status has no work here so you don’t have to address me with that title. You can call me, Zeke.”

Hey, I am trying to avoid death flags here. Don’t you know that. At the very least that I wanted to do is to become close with you. “Even so, it is uncomfortable for me to call you that way, Young Heir of Duke Aland. I find myself, such as from Marquess Family to a Duke family, to be unrespectful if I grant your wish.” Beatrice trying to convince Zeke. “But if it is an order, then, that would change everything.” as she continued. This way I would put up a gap between him and I.

“Hmm..,”

“Young Heir of Duke, if you may, I would like to leave as I need to organize my belongings at the dorm.”

“You are being mean, Lady Beatrice.”

Mean? Hearing the response of Zeke, Beatrice flinched. Wait, did I trigger my death flag? “Had I perhaps appeared unrespectful to you, Young Heir of Duke, I humbly apologized.”, she answered with trembling hands.

“Yes, you are.”, Zeke languidly response to her.

“I am very sorry.”, Beatrice said apologetically by lowering her head more.

“Then, if you truly are…”

“Yes, Young Heir of Duke. I will do everything to make amends.” Now, Beatrice hands were sweating.

“Call me Zeke.” Zeke smiled triumphantly.

“Yes, Young Heir— What??”, Beatrice, who still head is down, lifted her head which now, met the crimson red eyes of Zeke and found herself dumbfounded.
